Brockton, Mass. – The Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League announced on Wednesday that OF
Palmer Karr has been traded to the Grand Prairie AirHogs of the American Association in exchange for OF
Mike Conroy (left).
Conroy, a native of Scituate, Mass., split the 2009 season between the AirHogs and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the Atlantic League. In 70 games with Grand Prairie, he hit .315 with 35 RBI, leading the league with seven triples. He also spent 2008 with both Southern Maryland and Grand Prairie, putting together a .294 average while with the AirHogs.
Originally a first-round pick (43rd overall) by Cleveland in the 2001 draft, Conroy, 27, played six seasons in the Indians’ system. His best season came in 2003, when he hit .292 with Mahoning Valley of the Class-A New York-Penn League, finishing second in the league with 129 total bases, third with 84 hits and fourth with 44 RBI.
The lefthander played high school baseball at Boston College High in Dorchester, Mass., where as a senior in 2001, his team won the state championship, and he was selected to USA Today’s high school All-America second team. He was one of five players from B.C. High’s 2001 team to be drafted by a major-league organization.
Karr completed a superb first season with Brockton in 2009, finishing second in the league with 19 home runs, a Rox single-season record, and 42 extra-base hits to go along with a .280 average and 62 RBI. It was the Homewood, Ala., native’s fifth season in professional baseball, all of them in the independent ranks. The 27-year-old had previously played in the United League, Central League, and American Association, and was originally signed out of Berry College.
The Rox will begin their ninth season of professional baseball at Campanelli Stadium in 2010, with the club’s season opener May 28 at home against the Worcester Tornadoes. Season ticket packages and mini-plans are currently on sale and can be purchased by calling the Rox’ office at (508) 559-7000.
